Background of the Study
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing concern among the elderly, with an increasing number of older adults experiencing kidney function deterioration due to factors like hypertension, diabetes, and aging (Sulaimon et al., 2024). In Taraba State, where access to specialized healthcare services is limited, the management of CKD is often left to general healthcare practitioners, including nurses. Geriatric nurses, who specialize in the care of older adults, play a critical role in the management of CKD by providing nursing care, promoting early detection, and managing the various complications that arise from the disease (Adeoye et al., 2023). This review aims to explore the role of geriatric nurses in managing CKD in Taraba State, focusing on their responsibilities, challenges, and the potential impact of their care on patient outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
The elderly population in Taraba State is at significant risk of developing chronic kidney disease, yet there is a lack of specialized care tailored to their needs. Geriatric nurses are central to managing CKD in these individuals, but their roles and effectiveness in this capacity have not been well explored in the local context. The absence of specialized renal care units and trained nephrologists exacerbates the burden on nurses in providing appropriate care. This review seeks to evaluate the contributions of geriatric nurses in the management of CKD among the elderly in Taraba State, identifying the challenges they face and assessing the effectiveness of their interventions.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the role of geriatric nurses in managing chronic kidney disease in elderly patients in Taraba State.
To assess the challenges faced by geriatric nurses in providing care for elderly patients with chronic kidney disease in Taraba State.
To evaluate the impact of geriatric nursing interventions on the health outcomes of elderly CKD patients in Taraba State.
Research Questions
