Background of the Study

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing concern among the elderly, with an increasing number of older adults experiencing kidney function deterioration due to factors like hypertension, diabetes, and aging (Sulaimon et al., 2024). In Taraba State, where access to specialized healthcare services is limited, the management of CKD is often left to general healthcare practitioners, including nurses. Geriatric nurses, who specialize in the care of older adults, play a critical role in the management of CKD by providing nursing care, promoting early detection, and managing the various complications that arise from the disease (Adeoye et al., 2023). This review aims to explore the role of geriatric nurses in managing CKD in Taraba State, focusing on their responsibilities, challenges, and the potential impact of their care on patient outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

The elderly population in Taraba State is at significant risk of developing chronic kidney disease, yet there is a lack of specialized care tailored to their needs. Geriatric nurses are central to managing CKD in these individuals, but their roles and effectiveness in this capacity have not been well explored in the local context. The absence of specialized renal care units and trained nephrologists exacerbates the burden on nurses in providing appropriate care. This review seeks to evaluate the contributions of geriatric nurses in the management of CKD among the elderly in Taraba State, identifying the challenges they face and assessing the effectiveness of their interventions.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the role of geriatric nurses in managing chronic kidney disease in elderly patients in Taraba State.

  2. To assess the challenges faced by geriatric nurses in providing care for elderly patients with chronic kidney disease in Taraba State.

  3. To evaluate the impact of geriatric nursing interventions on the health outcomes of elderly CKD patients in Taraba State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the role of geriatric nurses in the management of chronic kidney disease among elderly patients in Taraba State?

  2. What challenges do geriatric nurses face in managing chronic kidney disease in the elderly in Taraba State?

  3. How do geriatric nursing interventions influence the outcomes of elderly patients with chronic kidney disease in Taraba State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Geriatric nurses play a significant role in managing chronic kidney disease in elderly patients in Taraba State.

  2. The challenges faced by geriatric nurses, including resource limitations and lack of specialized training, negatively impact the quality of care for elderly patients with chronic kidney disease.

  3. Geriatric nursing interventions improve the health outcomes of elderly patients with chronic kidney disease in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This review will focus on the role of geriatric nurses in managing chronic kidney disease among the elderly in Taraba State. Limitations include the limited availability of specific data on the topic and the generalizability of findings from other regions to Taraba State.

Definitions of Terms

  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): A long-term condition characterized by a gradual loss of kidney function over time, often linked to diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

  • Geriatric Nursing: A specialized field of nursing that focuses on the care of older adults, addressing their unique health needs and challenges.

  • Elderly: Typically refers to individuals aged 65 and older, though this may vary based on context.
